When Smoke Rises

While When Smoke Rises may not reach the heights of perfection and at times feels somewhat one-dimensional, it undeniably serves as an impressive and promising showcase of Mustafa's talent and potential. Prior to delving into the album, my familiarity with Mustafa was limited, with only hearing his popular song ‘Air Forces.’ Although I wasn't initially taken with the single, a second listen prompted an appreciation, especially upon learning of Frank Dukes and James Blake's involvement in the project and its folk style. Despite its shortness, spanning only eight songs and 24 minutes, the album boasts standout songwriting, with Mustafa's amazing lyrics and beautiful melodies shining through. While the production occasionally recedes into the background, allowing Mustafa to take center stage, I couldn't help but feel that it could have been more dynamic. Moreover, the album's consistent sound throughout could have benefited from a touch of experimentation. Nevertheless, Mustafa's haunting vocals, accompanied by minimal ambient guitars, create a captivating atmosphere. His heartfelt expression of grief and loss, paired with poignant songwriting, makes for a deeply moving listening experience, offering a unique perspective rarely heard in folk music. This project presents a compelling glimpse into Mustafa's talent, it leaves room for anticipation of his future growth and exploration within the genre.
